Dental Emergency Q & A

Pragasam Family Dentistry, Inc.

What should you do about a chipped or broken tooth?

A chipped or broken tooth may not seem urgent, but it's actually something that requires immediate attention. When a tooth is broken or chipped, the delicate interior part of the tooth is exposed to bacteria from which it was previously protected. This can rapidly lead to serious decay and could even eventually lead to loss of the tooth if you don't get help quickly.

How should you handle a tooth that has been knocked out?

If your tooth is knocked out, it's a true dental emergency. From the time that the tooth is knocked out, you have about an hour to try to save the tooth. Get the tooth, handling it only by the enamel, and rinse it off using cool or lukewarm water. Drop the tooth into a glass of regular milk (soy milk, almond milk, and low-fat cow's milk don't have the preservatives needed.)

If you call ahead to Pragasam Family Dentistry to let us know you're on the way, we can arrange Dr. Pragasam's schedule so that he can see you promptly. If you've arrived promptly, the chances of saving the tooth can be quite good. Even if the tooth can't be saved, Dr. Pragasam can help with a dental bridge, dental implant, or another natural-looking solution.

What are some other common dental emergencies?

Pragasam Family Dentistry often sees patients with problems like chipped or cracked teeth, knocked out teeth, and other issues including:

  • Sudden swelling in the mouth or jaw
  • Severe mouth pain
  • Knots, bulges, or other growths in the gums
  • Object lodged within the teeth
